American Minute for August 16th: Charles Finney died AUGUST 16, 1875. An attorney, Finney saw so many Scripture references in Blackstone's Law Commentaries that he bought a Bible and came to faith. Charles Finney's 1835 Revival Lectures inspired George Williams to found the YMCA-Young Men's Christian Association-in 1844, and William Booth to found The Salvation Army in 1865. Charles Finney formed the Benevolent Empire, a network of volunteer organizations to aid with social problems which in 1834 had a budget rivaling the Federal Government. Concerning the Kingdom of God, Charles Finney wrote "Every member must work or quit. No honorary members." While Charles Finney was president of Oberlin College, 1851-1866, it was a station on the Underground Railroad smuggling slaves to freedom and it granted the first college degree in the United States to a black woman, Mary Jane Patterson. Charles Finney wrote: "The time has come for Christians to vote for honest men, and take consistent ground in politics or the Lord will curse them...Politics are a part of a religion in such a country as this, and Christians must do their duty to their country as a part of their duty to God." Charles Finney concluded: "God will bless or curse this nation according to the course Christians take in politics."

Tell Congress to Protect Young Girls - As kids get ready to go back to school, their safety is top on the priority list. Imagine this frightening scenario. A young girl is taken across state lines by her older boyfriend or predatory family member so that she can have an abortion and avoid a parental notification law. As you probably know, different states have different laws regarding abortion. The Child Interstate Abortion Notification Act (CIANA) is commonsense legislation that would prevent this. CIANA prevents the transport of minors across state lines in order to procure and abortion, and would require the abortion practitioner to notify a parent if the patient was from out of state. Almost 80% of the public supports legislation like this.

Americans View Media Bias As Big Problem, Poll Shows (CNSNews.com) - A full 55 percent of likely American voters think that media bias is more of a problem than campaign contributions in the 2008 presidential race, according to a Rasmussen Reports poll released Monday. An earlier Rasmussen poll conducted July 19 revealed that 57 percent of likely voters think Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.) has received the best treatment from the media so far, while 21 percent or respondents think Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) has received the best media treatment.
One Party, Under Obama As both sides gear up for the conventions this month, one thing is clear. This is not your grandparents' Democratic party. Same-sex marriage. Abortion-on-demand. Comprehensive sex education. They all add up to the most radical platform ever to make an appearance at the Democratic convention. For the first time in history, the Democratic planks will call for the repeal of the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) and the military's "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" policy. Democrats put in writing their intent to defeat any effort to weaken Roe v. Wade. This is the face of the Left under Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.) who is single-handedly recasting his party in the image of NARAL and the Human Rights Campaign. Although the last Democratic president, Bill Clinton, was the one who signed DOMA into law, Sen. Obama is adamant about repealing it, an act that would leave every state in America at risk of being forced to recognize homosexual marriage. His congressional cohorts tried a similar strategy in Congress and failed to find support for their extreme agenda among families. To the dismay of voters across the country, the leadership used their majority status to push the Employment Nondiscrimination Act (ENDA), introduced numerous pieces of legislation that would give spousal benefits to gay couples, and even held a hearing on the possible repeal of the "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" policy. With approval ratings in the single-digits, it it's obvious that the liberal agenda didn't resonate with voters then-and even hidden behind Obama's flowery rhetoric, it's unlikely to appeal to Americans now.

His own special interests are never called special interests. Neither are the environmental extremists who support the Democrats called special interests. But the green zealots who have for decades blocked the country from using oil within our own borders—more oil than in Saudi Arabia, by the way—are also among the special interests with a big voice in the Democratic Party. They are also a major factor in shutting down the democratic voting process—in this case, in the House of Representatives, where Speaker Nancy Pelosi refuses to allow a vote on drilling for oil in places where the green zealots don’t want drilling. The Congressional Democrats could of course vote to continue forbidding drilling in those places. But voters paying $4 a gallon for gas are not likely to agree with the green zealots—and recent polls show that they do not. Rather than lose votes in the November elections by voting with the green zealots, or lose the money that the green zealots contribute to the Democratic Party coffers, Nancy Pelosi simply shut down the House of Representatives, so that there could be no votes, and turned off the lights so that C-SPAN could not broadcast Republicans’ speeches protesting what happened. After all, what is democracy compared to support from the green zealots?”
ANGRY MICHELLE AND THE RACE CARD GrassTopsUSA Exclusive Commentary By Don Feder - A petition on MoveOn.org ("Against FOX's Racist & Hate Filled Smears") is an indication of just how far the left will go playing the race card this year. As Barack's chances of becoming the next president dim, charges of racism will become more frequent, increasingly hysterical and detached from reality. MoveOn.org warns: "Fox must stop injecting racism, prejudice and fear into our political dialogue. We intend to hold FOX, its advertisers, and its personalities accountable for FOX's attempts to smear the Obamas." The petition is accompanied by a video which tries to make this case. Regarding Obama, Bill O'Reilly used the word "lynch" (he said he wouldn't engage in same -- in this case meaning joining in a baseless attack). The film then reminded us that "Southern whites used lynchings to terrorize and intimidate freed blacks." Thus, by saying he wouldn't launch an unprovoked attack, O'Reilly now is the moral equivalent of the Imperial Grand Dragon. Talk about smears. The video focused primarily on discussions of the oft-repeated charge that the lovely Michelle Obama is "an angry, black woman." Well, let's see: She's angry. She's black. And she's a woman. That would make her what -- Doris Day? Would "disgruntled, African-American female" be more acceptable?
Gay Marriage Opponents Seek to Reverse New Law - The gay marriage fight in Massachusetts might not be over after all. Opponents of same-sex marriages are seeking a ballot question that would prevent gay and lesbian couples from getting married here if their union wouldn't be legal in their home state. Brian Camenker of the group Mass Resistance said Friday lawmakers and Gov. Deval Patrick bowed to the will of the "gay lobby" last month by approving the repeal of a 1913 statute that banned such marriages.
Calif. court: Homosexual rights trump Christian convictions The same California Supreme Court that created a "right" to homosexual "marriage" earlier this year has now ruled that the state may force healthcare professionals to provide services that support an immoral and physically dangerous lifestyle.
Kids and Pornography - Each year about 40 percent of teens and preteens visit sexually explicit sites either deliberately or accidentally, studies here and abroad show. In a study in the February, 2007 Pediatrics (Vol. 119, No. 2, pages 247–257), for example, attorney Janis Wolak, psychologist Kimberly Mitchell, PhD, and sociologist David Finkelhor, PhD, director of the University of New Hampshire's (UNH) Crimes Against Children Research Center, found that 42 percent of a nationally representative sample of 1,500 Internet users ages 10 to 17 had been exposed to online porn in the last year, with two-thirds reporting only unwanted exposure. In fact, the incidence of unwanted exposure has risen for this age group, from about 26 percent between 1999 and 2000, to 34 percent in 2005, the team has found. APA monitor here

For Most People, College Is a Waste of Time By CHARLES MURRAY - Imagine that America had no system of post-secondary education, and you were a member of a task force assigned to create one from scratch. One of your colleagues submits this proposal: First, we will set up a single goal to represent educational success, which will take four years to achieve no matter what is being taught. We will attach an economic reward to it that seldom has anything to do with what has been learned. We will urge large numbers of people who do not possess adequate ability to try to achieve the goal, wait until they have spent a lot of time and money, and then deny it to them. We will stigmatize everyone who doesn't meet the goal. We will call the goal a "BA." You would conclude that your colleague was cruel, not to say insane. But that's the system we have in place.
Today’s College Campus Life: Games Students Play By Marie Jon - (Higher Education? Parents need to build support for morality and common sense in their children before dispatching them to the libertinism that dominates much of college life.) Soon, college students from all over America will start the fall semester. Freshman orientation will begin and there will be a mad dash to join (some not too wholesome) fraternities and sororities. Why degrade a college tradition? Because a good number of the social frat and sorority houses have become perverted “deprogramming” institutions whose mission is to undo everything that conscientious parents have strived to teach their kids through the years they’ve lived under their tutelage. Be aware that college has trappings that include all the rituals of campus life. If you have not had a long heart-to-heart talk with your child who is about to enter a secular college, it could be their undoing. Every possible temptation is laid out before them like a buffet. Most institutions of higher learning are liberal and secular; consequently, they have become ultra-permissive bastions of the MTV lifestyle.

Activist Group Launches Campaign and Web Site to Expose Obama's Abortion Extremism Operation Rescue has launched a web site, ObamaWantsYou.com, as part of a multi-faceted campaign to expose Sen. Barack Obama's fanatical abortion views. The web site features an image of Obama dressed as Uncle Sam, with the slogan "Obama Wants You To Pay For Abortions." It also features six other extremist abortion views that Obama has espoused, including his belief that children are a punishment, and his heartless opposition to legislation that would provide protection to infants born alive as the result of a failed abortion.

Evangelist Bentley stepping down Todd Bentley will step down as head of Fresh Fire Ministries, after the ministry revealed he had an "unhealthy relationship" with a female staffer. That announcement comes one week after Bentley's ministry announced he and his wife were separating.
Todd Bentley’s Personal Problems (Rick Joyner) I did not hear that Todd was going through a personal crisis until the day before our meeting with him here. When I saw him Wednesday night, he immediately wanted to share with me about his personal problems—especially about his recent separation from his wife. Todd did not share this in a way to try and justify himself, but he wanted me to know what was going on with him to give me an out if I did not think he should minister the next day. I greatly appreciated this. I still do not know all of the details of his separation, but I did ask him if there had been any immorality on his part, or if he had affections for someone else that was causing this. He assured me that he had never committed adultery, and that there was no “other woman” that caused his separation. Some of his leaders who I talked to also confirmed that Todd had not been in any immoral relationship, though they were all grieving over Todd’s marital problems. The problems Todd and his wife have had getting along have been public knowledge for several years. I don’t know enough of the details to blame anyone, but I know Todd quite well, and being married to him has got to be like being hand-cuffed to a hurricane. Todd is so intense he makes Mike Bickle and Bob Weiner seem laid back. I think he is very much like the Apostle Peter. What makes him capable of such extraordinary faith also makes him prone to extraordinary blunders. Todd is an extreme manifestation of an emerging extreme generation. His wife may deserve to sit at the right hand of the Lord in the kingdom, and anyone who has worked with him should be up there close somewhere too. Like it or not, that is often the nature of those who accomplish some of the greatest spiritual exploits—they also make some of the biggest bloopers. Hearing about these problems did not surprise me at all. Since I have now heard about more details, I’m still not shocked. These are problems, and they need to be fixed, which includes repenting and turning around, but if we want the victories and breakthroughs we all hope and pray for, they usually come through people with the same kind of nature. Right after Jesus gave Peter one of the greatest commendations in Scripture for the receiving the greatest of all revelations, that Jesus is the Christ, and then gave him the keys to the kingdom, He had to give Peter one of the greatest rebukes in Scripture by calling him Satan! (see Matthew 16:18-23)
