Senator Edward Kennedy has stated: "During my service in the United States Senate, I have often been called a Liberal, and it usually was not meant as a compliment. But I remember what my brother said about liberalism shortly before he was elected president. He said: 'If by a Liberal, they mean someone who looks ahead and not behind… Someone who welcomes new ideas without rigid reactions… Someone who cares about the welfare of the people—their health, their housing, their schools, their jobs, their civil rights, their civil liberties…Someone who believes we can break through the stalemate and the suspicion that grips us… If that is what they mean by a Liberal… Then I am proud to say I am a Liberal.'" [i]
Progressive liberals talk as if conservatives are not passionate about these same issues or new ideas for improving the American way of life. Sadly, most progressive liberal ideas have diminished the American way of life.
Take caring and charity for instance. Those who assume only liberals are caring need only review and compare the charity of conservatives vs. that of liberals. Conservatives are more generous than liberals. And there is a huge divide between those who give to charity and those who don't. Arthur Brooks documents in "Who Really Cares," what he calls the "Right-Left charity gap" between conservatives and liberals. [ii] (For a book review see Thomas Sowell’s commentary on this book.) [iii]
On the "Civil" Rights issues, progressive liberals provide no basis for boundaries in determining how "civil rights" are to be "entitled," whereas Christians and social conservatives adhere to the boundary established by the Declaration of Independence[iv], "the Laws of Nature and of Nature's God." Of course "progressive liberals" cannot fathom a just and righteous God and/or do not like being told that what they may consider right is a sin or abomination according to God’s Holy Word.
For example, it’s progressive liberals who are bent on redefining marriage and family. They do not consider this Godly design is the basic ingredient of a structured "civil" society. In their "looking ahead and not behind," they claim this view is discriminatory. Would progressive liberals, if they read Deuteronomy [v] and compared it to the U. S. Constitution[vi] come to realize the glaring similarities, including the three branches of government? They would have to “look behind” to do so.
Therefore in their demands for their demented view of the “separation of Church and State”[vii] progressive liberals while "looking ahead and not behind" are shaping a government which replaces the primary teaching role of parents with mandated secular indoctrination throughout government/union run schools.[viii] Progressive liberal Democrats, secular universities, and the mainstream media together not only administer a deceptive political correctness, but also prevent and demean all that is Judeo-Christian, exactly the opposite of America’s Founders.
Progressive liberals prefer to mandate fixes to America's social ills by taxation deceptively called redistribution of wealth. This pie-in-the-sky false utopia of socialism unjustly penalizes those who succeed and rewards those who do not. This tactic, as history proves, will ultimately destroy the Republic they themselves have been wealthy benefactors, because they refuse to “look behind” as though they are immune from past disasters of the same formula.
"Progress, far from consisting in change, depends on retentiveness. When change is absolute there remains no being to improve and no direction is set for possible improvement: and when experience is not retained, as among savages, infancy is perpetual. Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it. In the first stage of life the mind is frivolous and easily distracted, it misses progress by failing in consecutiveness and persistence. This is the condition of children and barbarians, in which instinct has learned nothing from experience." --George Santayana [ix]
The mix of complacency and cynicism of American citizens, a result of “looking ahead and not behind,” may prove to be the tipping point of this Great Republic. A despicable disregard and lack of appreciation for America’s founding, the Patriot’s Declaration[x], and the condition and loss of many of the Army of citizens, because they refused to live under the unjust rule of a monarchy. Yet this is what progressive liberals are aiming to do, a government of the government, by the government, and ultimately for the government.
"But of all the views of this law none is more important, none more legitimate, than that of rendering the people the safe, as they are the ultimate, guardians of their own liberty. For this purpose the reading in the first stage, where they will receive their whole education, is proposed, as has been said, to be chiefly historical. History by apprising them of the past will enable them to judge of the future; it will avail them of the experience of other times and other nations; it will qualify them as judges of the actions and designs of men; it will enable them to know ambition under every disguise it may assume; and knowing it, to defeat its views." --Thomas Jefferson [xi]
“A democracy is always temporary in nature; it simply cannot exist as a permanent form of government. A democracy will continue to exist up until the time that voters discover that they can vote themselves generous gifts from the public treasury. From that moment on, the majority always votes for the candidates who promise the most benefits from the public treasury, with the result that every democracy will finally collapse due to loose fiscal policy, which is always followed by a dictatorship.” --Alexander Tyler [xii]
So the challenge for those who respect and learn from history is how in the world can we reach progressive liberals who are blinded by the fact the government, not God, is the answer to all that confronts us? Unlike America’s Founders who confronted EVERY issue from their foundation of Biblical moral virtue, progressive liberals have no foundation except that of political correctness.
